On 8 April 2016, following the start of the Waste Management Programme in Thrikkaipetta by Uravu Eco Links (UEL) in collaboration with Uravu and the Village Committee, a presentation on waste management was given to all interested villagers by Uravu Eco Links’ intern Camille Drompt and translated by Sivaraj and Dr Abdullah. The objective of the presentation was to raise awareness on waste and recycling. The villagers were invited to the event with the kind help of Thrikkaipetta’s Village Committee. More than 30 people listened to the presentation, which was followed by a discussion.
The presentation focused on the ‘3R Theory’ (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle), which is part of the basic environmental principles of Uravu, Uravu Eco Links and the Village Committee. Special attention was given to the topic recycling, as well as to the dangers of plastic dumping and burning for people’s health, global warming, the pollution of water, fauna and flora. Camille explained UEL’s Waste Management Plan for Thrikkaipetta. The villagers were invited to participate in the waste collection scheme, which is based on the recycling of segregated waste. The aim is to recycle as much waste as possible in Thrikkaipetta instead of burning or dumping it.
